How long does Pastrami last?
The shelf life of pastrami, a cured and smoked beef brisket, can vary based on how it’s stored and whether it’s sliced or whole:
- Refrigeration (Sliced): Once sliced, pastrami can last for about 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator if stored properly in an airtight container or wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. The quality might decline over time as it can dry out or lose its flavor.
- Refrigeration (Whole): A whole unopened piece of pastrami can last longer, approximately 1 to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. It should be tightly wrapped in butcher or parchment paper and stored in an airtight container or sealed bag to prevent it from drying out.
- Freezing: Pastrami freezes well. When tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and placed in a freezer bag or container, it can last for 1 to 2 months in the freezer. Thaw it in the refrigerator before consuming.
Always check for any signs of spoilage, such as an off odor, changes in texture, or mold formation, before consuming stored pastrami. If it appears or smells off, it’s safer to discard it to avoid the risk of foodborne illness.
